Summer of 2013 my wife and I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Knoxville Tennessee with an idea for a Cali-Mex restaurant. We had a very limited menu being that neither of us had experience in restaurants so we decided ultimately to give it a go with a food truck. So the following summer we bought a very retro RV (a 1974 Starcraft Starcruiser to be exact) and built out the Retro Taco truck. As the 13th registered truck in the Knoxville pilot program we were lucky enough to help shape what is now a booming food truck industry. It was a really unique time in the industry that took our truck all over East Tennessee found often at the Market Square Farmer's Market and breweries around town, birthdays, weddings, festivals, church events, frat parties, gayla’s, homecomings, customer appreciations, and a whole sea of corporate lunches. It was a good time but the urge to take it to another level was always there so in 2015 we took the leap and bought a dilapidated old service station in Strawberry Plains, which is now Retro Taco Restaurant and Bar.
The following spring, on Cinco de Mayo, we finally opened our doors with an expanded menu that today includes very original Americana/Cali-Mex fusion of tacos quesadillas, nachos, burritos, chimichangas, hot wings, loaded wedges, Mexican street corn, cheese curds, fried green tomatoes, and a lot of other goodies unique to our concept. We also have an extensive beer list and often feature local craft breweries on tap and a full bar with potent margaritas.
Today we operate as a restaurant from 11 - 9, and a bar late into the evening with darts, pool, and cornhole. Soon the back room will be open with more pool tables and back lawn seating, fire pit, and horseshoes.
